Neurontin (gabapentin) was initially synthesized for the treatment of epileptic seizures in adults. Today though, it is more widely used as a medication to relieve pain and psychiatric disorders.
Neurontin was approved by the FDA in 1994. In addition to epilepsy, it won approval in 2002 for treating neuropathic pain following shingles.
Several studies have found that Neurontin is no more effective (and slightly less effective in one study) than a placebo.
As effective as a placebo
Several large and double-blind studies have found that Neurontin is no more effective than (and in one study, slightly less effective than) a placebo.
Neurontin has shown limited usefulness in the treatment of anxiety disorders, depression and insomnia.
Side effects, both mild and alarming
Regardless of how effective Neurontin is in treating epilepsy and other disorders, it has been shown that there are a number of Neurontin side effects—both mild and alarming.
Many consumers have been surprised to learn how Pfizer and its subsidiaries conducted Neurontin marketing. Some called it “stealth marketing,” and others called it illegal to push the drug on doctors and their patients for off-label purposes. That is why Pfizer pled guilty in 2004 to civil and criminal charges for its Neurontin marketing practices, paying fines totaling $430 million.
